Designing Across Sydney: North Shore, Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs

designingacross sydney People often assume interior design is really just about furniture and finishes, the things you can point to in a room. In practice, a large part of the work happens before any of that: understanding the character of the home and the place it sits in. Working across Sydney’s North Shore, Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs means designing for three genuinely different contexts, and it’s one of the things I enjoy most about the studio’s client base. North Shore Home to our studio On the North Shore, where I’m based, I find the strongest interiors lean into the established character of the area: deep blocks, mature trees, a slower rhythm. Recent projects in Roseville, Longueville and Belrose have all played with this, clean architectural lines balanced against natural materials and a genuinely lived-in feel, rather than anything that reads as showy.     Northern Beaches A more relaxed vibe Further north, along the beaches, the brief changes. Light and outlook do more of the work, and the interiors that suit these homes tend to sit back a little: natural texture, a relaxed material palette, furniture considered enough to hold its own against a water view without competing with it.     Eastern Suburbs history and character In the Eastern Suburbs, I’m often working with two very different kinds of homes side by side: period properties with real architectural bones, and newer builds designed around a view. Both call for the same sculptural, editorial hand, just applied differently.   Wherever a project sits, across the North Shore, Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs or elsewhere across Greater Sydney, the process I bring to it doesn’t change: creative direction, editing and a clear point of view, turned into a home that feels resolved rather than merely decorated. If you’re renovating or styling a home anywhere in Sydney, I’d love to talk. More articles

Design That Lasts: How to Create a Timeless Home Without Playing It Safe

Design That Lasts:Creating a Timeless Home Without Playing It Safe In the world of interior design, it’s easy to be seduced by trends. Social media is full of glossy photos showcasing the latest looks, but what feels fresh today can feel tired tomorrow. If you’re investing in a home you want to love for years to come, timeless design is the way forward. But timeless doesn’t mean boring. In fact, the most enduring spaces often include bold ideas, layered textures, and unique choices, executed with a refined hand. Here’s how to create a home that stands the test of time without losing personality or interest: Start with a Strong Foundation The bones of your space matter. A timeless home begins with thoughtful layout, quality finishes, and a harmonious palette. Choose classic materials like natural stone, timber, and linen that age gracefully and always feel considered. Keep permanent elements (like flooring, joinery, and benchtops) elegant and understated, so they provide a versatile backdrop for layering. Add Personality Through Layering Timeless doesn’t mean playing it safe. The most memorable homes include personal touches; art, sculpture, books, collected objects, that tell a story. These pieces make your space feel lived-in and loved, rather than showroom-perfect. Layering texture is key: soft wool rugs, leather, velvet, aged brass, handmade ceramics. These elements bring warmth and richness to a room. Use Colour with Confidence Neutrals will always have a place in timeless design, but that doesn’t mean colour is off-limits. It just means choosing hues that feel grounded and enduring. Think olive, ochre, navy, burgundy, forest green, colours that feel timeless in nature and design. Add colour through artwork, soft furnishings, or painted accents, elements that can evolve over time. Invest in Quality Over Quantity Timeless interiors are built around quality. Rather than rushing to furnish every room, take time to invest in fewer, better pieces. A well-made dining table, a sculptural armchair, a beautiful pendant light, these elements will carry your home for decades. If budget is a concern, work in stages. A professional designer can help prioritise decisions so you’re not cutting corners that you’ll later regret. Embrace Subtle Evolution Even the most timeless homes evolve over time. As your lifestyle shifts, so too should your interiors. The key is to keep the foundational elements strong so you can update with ease. Switch out cushions, change the art, add a new chair or lamp, small adjustments that keep your home feeling current without reinventing the wheel. Creating a timeless home isn’t about avoiding risk. It’s about making confident, considered choices that feel authentic to you, and allowing space for growth. If you’re ready to create a home that will look and feel just as beautiful in ten years as it does today, I’d love to help you bring that vision to life. Let’s design something enduring together. The True Value of Hiring a Designer

The True Value of Hiring a Designer: What You’re Really Paying For If you’ve ever wondered whether hiring an interior designer is worth the investment, you’re not alone.  On the surface, it might seem like a luxury, something reserved for the elite or the overly busy. But the truth is, engaging a professional designer doesn’t just lead to a more beautiful home, it can also save you time, money, and stress in ways that aren’t always visible upfront. So what are you really paying for when you bring in a designer? Here’s what many people don’t see: Years of Expertise at Your Fingertips Interior design is far more than selecting cushions and paint colours.  Behind the scenes, it involves spatial planning, proportion, lighting, flow, colour theory, material sourcing, procurement management, and more.  With over 25 years of experience in multiple design disciplines, I bring a refined eye and deep understanding of how to create spaces that are both functional and beautiful. A good designer doesn’t guess, they know. And that means you get it right the first time. Avoiding Expensive Mistakes Many clients come to me after trying to do it themselves, often having spent thousands on pieces that didn’t fit the space, didn’t work together, or didn’t last. Hiring a designer early on can prevent those missteps by ensuring each decision fits within a larger, intentional vision. Every centimetre is considered. Every choice is purposeful. You won’t be buying things twice. Access to Trusted Trades and Unique Resources As a professional designer, I have long-standing relationships with trusted suppliers, custom makers, and tradespeople who prioritise quality and service. I also have access to products and materials not available to the general public. These relationships mean you benefit from better workmanship, unique finds, and a smoother experience overall. Project Coordination and Peace of Mind A full renovation or furnishing project can involve hundreds of moving parts, from floor plans and quotes to deliveries and install days. I manage all of it so you don’t have to.  I coordinate the details, solve the problems, and keep everything moving. The result? A stress-free experience and a finished home that exceeds expectations. A Home That Reflects You (Not Just a Pinterest Board) Anyone can copy a trend, but a truly great home feels personal, layered, and timeless. My role is to interpret your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences and translate them into a space that feels like you, only better. Together, we create a home you’ll love living in every single day. When you hire a designer, you’re not just paying for a service, you’re investing in a result: a home that’s beautiful, functional, and perfectly suited to you. If you’re ready to transform your home with confidence, I’d love to guide you through the process. Book a consultation today to get started. More articles

Behind the Scenes: What It’s Really Like to Work With a Designer

Behind the Scenes: What It’s Really Like to Work With a Designer Hiring an interior designer can feel a little daunting at first. You might wonder: Will they understand my style? Will I still get a say in how everything looks? Is my project even big enough? These questions are completely normal, especially if you’ve never worked with a designer before. But here’s the truth: the right designer doesn’t take over. They partner with you to bring your vision to life in a way that’s elevated, seamless, and often better than you imagined. Let me take you behind the scenes of what it’s really like to work with a designer from our first conversation to the final reveal. Step 1: Discovery & Connection Every project begins with a chat. This could be a 15-minute design call or a full in-home consultation. We talk about your goals, your home, how you live, and what’s working or not. This is where we begin to uncover your vision, even if you don’t yet know what it looks like. By the end of this stage, we both get a sense of whether we’re a good fit. If we are, we move forward with a tailored proposal. Step 2: Design Planning & Concept Development Once the proposal is accepted, the creative process begins. I create a moodboard that reflects the overall vision for your home, and I begin developing ideas for furniture, finishes, colours, and layout. This phase is collaborative. You’ll have space to share feedback and ask questions, and I’ll guide you with professional insight to ensure the design feels cohesive, functional, and elevated. Step 3: Procurement & Project Coordination Once the design direction is finalised, we move into the practical side, ordering furnishings, booking trades, scheduling deliveries, and keeping everything on track. I handle all the moving parts, so you can stay focused on your life without the overwhelm. You’ll always know what’s happening (and when) through regular updates and clear communication. Step 4: Styling & The Final Reveal This is where the magic happens. Once everything arrives and is ready to install, I bring your home together in a single day (or over a few days depending on the project). The artwork is hung, cushions are fluffed, throws are layered, and every detail is placed with care. Seeing the look on my clients’ faces when they walk into their transformed home is the best part of what I do. The process of working with a designer should feel exciting, inspiring, and easy. You don’t have to know exactly what you want, you just have to be open to the possibilities. If you’ve been thinking about working with a designer but weren’t sure what to expect, I hope this gives you clarity and confidence. When you’re ready, I’d love to hear your story and help bring your home to life. More articles
